poem of the day (weekend)

632

The Brain - is wider than the Sky -
For - put them side by side -
The one the other will contain
With ease - and You - beside -

The Brain is deeper than the sea -
For - hold them - Blue to Blue -
The one the other will absorb -
As Sponges - Buckets - do -

The Brain is just the weight of God -
For - Heft them - Pound for Pound -
And they will differ - if they do -
As Syllable from Sound -

- Emily Dickinson

A less eloquent and gloomier statement about brains, useless and -well- not divine at all: "About that mystifying enthusiasm a million years ago for turning over as many human activities as possible to machinery: What could that have been but yet another acknowledgment by people that their big brains were no damn good?" (Vonnegut, Galápagos 1986) how depressing :)

I heard these lines once, recited by a garish Englishman, bearing a weak spot for good ole uncle Sam. I think he now lives in the spielhoodmuseum in Meckelen, where he recites Flemish poetry, to a band of Dutch tourists...
